Beginning Band & Choir Information

Considering taking band or choir at Housel Middle School?  Have questions about instruments, classes, etc...?  Wondering what instrument is right for you?  You've come to the right place!

What music classes are offered at Housel Middle School?

  • We offer one choir with students from 6th, 7th, & 8th grades.

  • We offer 6th grade Beginning Band, 7th grade Intermediate Band, & 8th grade Advanced Band.

  • All music classes at Housel are scheduled as full-year classes. Students interested in trying band are strongly encouraged to start in 6th grade, as they can learn alongside their fellow beginners.  Starting choir in later grades is more attainable, but to maximize the benefits (see below), I suggest starting as early as possible.

Why band or choir?

  • It's fun to make music together with others! (If that's not enough, read on!)

  • Studying music has many positive side effects.  Many studies showing increases in reading and math test scores, better attendance and school engagement, and higher college admissions rates among music students.

  • Music students learn to work methodically toward a long-term goal, to work toward perfection--even if we can never truly get there, and to work as a member of a team towards a common goal.

  • There are no "benchwarmers" in music--every member is vital!

  • Band & choir often represent the school to our community and beyond more than any other group, team, or class.  Between performances at concerts, festivals, parades, and pep band games, we reach many different audiences.

What else do I need to know about choir?

  • We have about 3-4 required performances outside of school as we share our talents with the community and beyond.

  • Students are expected to actively participate every day and sing (or at least try to!)

  • Students are asked to have black dress shoes & black pants/skirt for our concert attire. Full concert attire information here.
