Mr. Smith's Class

About Mr. Smith

Hello! Reading about the lost city of Pompeii, I decided my future career would be as an archaeologist when I was a 5th grader. While studying Anthropology and classical Roman History in college, I was lucky enough to study a summer with the Institute of Archaeology in London. Then something happened. I discovered middle school history and realized my real passion was teaching about the past. I was selected in 1996 as an original cadre member of the WEA / US West Learning Space Grant. In 2002 I was picked to be a participant in the Bill and Melinda Gates, Teacher Leadership Project, and then in 2003 and 2004 was picked to be a TLP regional coordinator for Wenatchee and Yakima. A believer in project-based learning, I started participating in National History Day and have sent students to the state competition for fourteen consecutive years and on three occasions have sent students to the national competition. In 2010, I was selected the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year. Then in 2014, selected to be one of 36 national Behring Teacher Ambassadors for National History Day. I received my National Board Certification for Adolescent Young Adult Social Studies in 2009. I have BA degrees in Anthropology and History, a BEd in Social Science Education, and an MEd in Technology supported Education all from Eastern Washington University. I also have a Masters of Arts in in History specializing in classical and medieval European studies from Washington State University.
