New Courses

PHS will start registering students for the 2023-24 schoolyear this week.  We are excited to share with everyone the new courses we will offer. 

Business Operations – Teacher: Kali Gilbertson 
Business Operations is a course where students will be running clothing store. Students will learn and practice customer service, advertising sales, pricing and merchandizing techniques.  This is a yearlong course.
Prerequisites: Intro to Marketing, Sports and Entertainment Marketing, or Marketing Management, open to 11th and 12th Graders

Computer Systems Engineering – Teacher: Kason Blair
A course that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to assemble, install, operate, maintain, and repair computers and related instruments. Includes instruction in power supplies, number systems, memory structure, buffers and registers, microprocessor design, peripheral equipment, programming, and networking. The student has an opportunity to earn the Comp TIA A+ certificate as component of the course. CompTIA A+ is the only industry recognized credential with performance testing to prove pros can think on their feet to perform critical IT support tasks. This is a yearlong class.
Prerequisites: Computer Science Essentials, Cybersecurity, or SWAT.

AP Computer Science Principles – Teacher: Kason Blair
Using Python® as a primary tool, students learn the fundamentals of coding, data processing, data security, and task automation, while learning to contribute to an inclusive, safe, and ethical computing culture. The course promotes computational thinking and coding fundamentals and introduces computational tools that foster creativity. Computer Science Principles helps students develop programming expertise and explore the workings of the Internet. Projects and problems include app development, visualization of data, cybersecurity, and simulation. Students will be eligible to the to take the AP Computer Science Principles test for college credit. 
Prerequisite: Computer Science Essentials

Introduction to Engineering Design – Teacher: Ryan Wood
This course will replace CADD. Students dig deep into the engineering design process applying a variety of engineering concepts such as material selection, human-centered design, manufacturability, and sustainability to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3-D modeling software and additive manufacturing.

Introduction to Sports Medicine – Teacher: TBD
This course is designed to introduce students to the field of sports medicine and will provide students the opportunity to explore related fields. It emphasizes the prevention, assessment and care for injuries and illness to the physically active including the components of exercise science, anatomy, and principles of safety. Students will receive instruction in sports medicine terminology, physical fitness, anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, legal issues, injury evaluation and prevention procedures, and careers in sports medicine. Students will also demonstrate skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), AED, first aid, and sports injury management and rehabilitation.

Advanced Sports Medicine - – Teacher: TBD
This course is a continuation of Introduction to Sports Medicine. This course provides advanced sports medicine students with instruction in advanced techniques and processes. This course will give students hands-on experience understanding and evaluating injuries commonly sustained by the competitive athlete. It includes all areas of sports medicine such as sports medicine terminology, musculoskeletal anatomy, evaluation, assessment, rehabilitation, and prevention of athletic injuries. Emphasis will be placed on evaluating and assessing athletic injuries. The appropriate use of technology and industry-standard equipment is an integral part of this course. Students are required to work after school assisting with athletic training at practices and games. This is a yearlong class. Students will be required to assist the athletic trainer after school at practices and games.
Prerequisites: Introduction to Health Science, or Introduction to Sports Medicine and Anatomy and Physiology.

CTE Worksite Learning Placement -Teacher: Rick Follett
Worksite Learning provides students the opportunity to learn in the workplace, while applying skills and knowledge obtained in a qualifying class. Worksite Learning, Instructional or Cooperative, occurs at a qualified worksite outside the classroom in fulfillment of a student’s career and educational plan. This designed to be a 2-class period course. 
Prerequisites: There is an application and approval process. Students must have completed two credits in the CTE Program Area associated with the worksite placement.

Mathematics in the Modern World – Teacher: TBD
Selected topics, from the development and applications of mathematics together with their relationship to the development of our present society, designed to advance critical thinking and quantitative reasoning.  
Prerequisite: Must meet required Accuplacer Test score
Credit: Math, 5 credits CWU Math 101 

Spanish for Heritage Speakers – Teacher: Athena Amapola
Provides instruction to build reading and writing skills of bilingual Heritage speakers. The class supports students in building their Spanish literacy skills so they can become biliterate. 
Prerequisites: STAMP Test score of 3 or higher, or successful completion of Spanish IV
