Curricular Area & Grade Level Target:

This WebQuest was used for a fifth grade class for science and language arts.

Objectives

or Essential Question:

This objectives for this lesson were:

  • To understand and use scientific concepts
  • To understand how interactions within and among systems causes change
  • To use features of non-fiction text and the Internet for research
  • To develop concepts and design for purposeful writing in order to present to an audience
  • To develop content and ideas to communicate clearly

Summary of

Activities:

(what were the students asked to do?)

To begin with, we discussed the purpose of forecasting weather and how weather is forecasted. Next, we studied patterns of weather and how it affects our world each day. Students worked in groups to complete a weather forecast based on predictions and knowledge of weather. They presented their findings to the class.

CRITIQUE:

(Was it successful? Did the kids learn what you wanted them to learn?  Would you do it again? What would you do differently, etc.)

The class enjoyed this WebQuest because they were able to interact with others in creating their presentation. I had to supplement it with the actual learning about weather. I also included many other websites about weather because the recommended sites did not offer enough information. We  used many nonfiction books for learning about weather words. I would do this again as a culminating activity to a unit on weather. I would be sure to include other hands-on activities so students could make more of their own predictions to understand how meteorologists make predictions. I would change some of the information on the WebQuest (add other links), and I would require them to make some kind of weather tool to demonstrate to the class (with an expository writing project about that tool).
