Overview

LITERATURE

 

*      Literature  (Genre – Legends)

*      Students will read, summarize, and discuss legends with the others in their group

*      Students will complete a Native American Legend summary sheet for each legend.

*      Worksheet parts:

*      Vocabulary

*      Animal personified

*      Key elements

·      Who?

·      What legend explains?

·      Where?

·      What information would link the legend to a Native American group?

*      Students should be prepared to answer basic comprehension questions dealing with the current legend.

*      Drama – students act out at least one legend

*      Included in Literature overview

 

HISTORY/CULTURE

 

*      Group Activities

*      Students will be working with other members of the group on the MAJOR Native American project.  Each day, the group members will score their peers using the Group Rubric.

*      Student Groups

*      Heterogeneous groups of 4 to 5 students

*      Each group will  focus on one Native American group

*      Weekly discussions

*      Each week, students will have an opportunity to meet with the teacher.  During this time, they will be asked to share the work from the preceding week.

*      Students are required to keep the above activities organized in their notebook.  At the completion of the unit, the activities will be given to the teacher to score.
