Goals & Explanation:

The PHS Social Studies Department strives to instill in the student a sense of appreciation and/or respect for diverse peoples and cultures inside and outside of the United States through the use of Social Sciences including History, Civics, Sociology, and Psychology.  Moreover, the students are encouraged to develop enhanced academic skills in the areas of Reading, Writing, and Listening while advancing positive socialization skills through the use of numerous educational opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom.  The ultimate goal is to produce an active and successful student who is ready to exhibit positive citizenship skills outside of the classroom.

The Prosser High School Social Studies department is dedicated to providing a quality education for all students.  Lessons are tailored to stimulate interest  and meet the needs of students of various learning styles and backgrounds.  There is heavy emphasis on student centered activities.  Students engage each other in discussions and activities that emphasize citizenship skills in  communication, argument development, analytical and organizational skills.  The overall content goal of the department is to provide historical, cultural, geographical, governmental, and economic information that will enable students to function successfully and responsibly in our Democracy.

The below quote illustrates one of the most important maxims in the social sciences.  It is important for people to individually evaluate and analyze material for themselves.  Teachers in the department present issues and historical events in an objective fashion, enabling students to develop their own conclusions:

"I think, therefore I Am!" -Rene Descartes
