Required Elements
All Geography students in the seventh grade at Housel Middle School will
participate in the World’s Fair. Each student has selected a country that they
will research and complete various assignments and projects from their Geography
and Language Arts classes. The assignments completed will be placed on a booth
this spring to be shared for viewing at the World’s Fair. Geography
Requirements The
following assignments are required for Geography students. Exact specifications for maps will be handed out
separately. Students are required
to do one political map and a locator map.
Maps must reflect as current data as possible for 2001.
Political Map
Create one political Map of your country or
country’s region. You will need
to include the capital city and other major cities, political units such as
provinces, and major transportation routes such as roads, canals, etc. Locator Map Create a map which shows the continent where your
country is located as well as which countries border your country. You will then
need to write a paragraph describing where your country is located in terms of
hemispheres and coordinates, bordering countries, physical features, etc. Complete a flag of your country that can be made of
paper or cloth. It must be of a size that will fit nicely on the middle panel of
your country’s display board (8-1/2 by 11-1/2 inches min.). Design and develop a color and ink brochure to give
to visitors. Look at examples of quality brochures to get ideas for inclusion
(national treasures, scenic and historical sites, museums, recreation, ethnic
art, and entertainment). Create
a fact box about your country. Include basic facts about your country including
population, capital city, primary language, etc. Creatively
display the items you’ve completed in Geography and Language Arts classes on a
board to be shared for public viewing on World’s Fair day. Prepare
and present a brief presentation of the information you’ve learned about your
country to your classmates. Use your board as a visual aid. Choose an original creation to complete. Each item
has two parts to it - 1)
Original creation. You will need to create an item that is associated with your
country. For example ( a diorama of Tiananmen square in China, a tooth pick
model of the Eiffel Tower, a colorful mask of the natives of Zambia, traditional
dress/shoes of the Netherlands, an original poem on life in Japan, a
mini-dictionary/alphabet of the Italian language from Italy, etc..) 2) Written piece. Describe or summarize your work in 100 words or more. Proper citation is necessary for using research information.
