2006 Summer Opportunity

Migrant Program selects "Astronauts"  for  2006 Space Academy

The state's Migrant Education Program has selected three migrant students -- and, a teacher chaperone -- for its annual scholarships to attend the weeklong Space Academy at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

The three students selected for the scholarship at this summer's July 15-22 camp are:

Lizette Melendez, student at Wapato M.S., Wapato From MERO 105 service area
Carlos Lopez, student at Soap Lake M.S., Soap Lake From MERO 171 service area
Arturo Martinez, student at Olympic M.S., Shelton From MERO 189 service area

  • Additionally, Corey Heitschmidt, a math teacher at Housel Middle School in Prosser, was chosen as the first recipient of MEP's scholarship to attend the Space Academy for Educators while chaperoning the three students. Previously, members of the state's Migrant Education Program offices served as chaperones on a rotating basis.

During the week, the students and chaperone will participate in astronaut-style training and simulations that will provide lasting learning experiences in science, math and space exploration. Also, they will hear presentations by Astronaut Story Musgrave, who fixed the Hubble Telescope and has flown on six shuttle missions and on all 5 shuttles.

  • Have a question?  Email Mr. Heitschmidt!

Adventures during the Space Camp Week:

A Space Camp Simulator of STS (Space Transportation System or Shuttle) Discovery featuring a Flight Deck and Mid Deck in front of full size Payload Bay with OMS pods and vertical stabilizer.  Front windows are obscured by video system to simulate views of launch and orbit.

This looks fun! The Multi Axis Trainer (MAT) spins in several directions at one time.  Sometimes you are upside down, sideways, or parallel to the ground!  Used to simulate an out of control spin in space and train astronauts for emergencies!

1/6 gravity chair to simulate walking on the moon.  Finally, I'll be able to dunk a basketball!!!  Where's the hoop!

Going down the water-landing parachute drop!  Talk about fun!
