8th Grade Applied Technology

 

Course Description:

They are exposed to a review of previously taught concepts as well as more detail and different technologies. Students will be taught the following concepts and technologies during their semester.

 

  1. Students will review measuring concepts with emphasis on the metric system.
  2. Students will review problem solving, and the methodical approach to solving complex problems, including where to find and how to use resources.
  3. Energy, alternative energy sources and electricity will be covered in detail, including practical wiring.
  4. Internal combustion engines and generators will be demonstrated and discussed.
  5. Students will be taught about computer hardware.  They will be exposed to all parts on the inside of the computer and do practical computer repair.
  6. Students will be exposed to a simple computer aided design (CAD) program and will learn the role that CADD plays in the development of new technology.
  7. Students will learn about the solar system and the sun as an energy source.
  8. Students will demonstrate the knowledge gained in both written form and in the building of a project.

 

Various techniques will be used to teach the above listed learning objectives.  Students will keep a notebook that contains all handouts, tests and homework.  Students will be subject to testing on the concepts taught and grading of papers and projects.

Students will also demonstrate the concepts learned in the energy unit by working in teams to build solar ovens with temperatures achieved in the 320-degree range in the spring.  They learn the concept of quality work in construction and manufacturing.  Students leave the classroom with a complete technology section that is a valuable reference in future problem solving.
