7th Grade Applied Technology
Course Description:
They are exposed to a review of previously taught concepts as well as more detail and different technologies. Students will be taught the following concepts and technologies during their semester.
1. Students will review measuring concepts with emphasis on volume and weight as well as length measuring concepts.
2. Students will review problem solving, and the methodical approach to solving problems. Students will learn where to locate and how to use resources to solve problems.
3. A unit on airplanes is covered in which students learn much of the basic physics associated with flight. Students also learn the vocabulary associated with airplanes. The functions of the different airplane parts that control flight movement are discussed.
4. Photography is taught during which both science and art concepts are learned. Different cameras are explored in detail and different aspects of photography are understood.
5. Students learn construction technologies especially as they relate to bridge building. They explore different bridge design and construction types. They design and build a bridge in teams of two, which is tested by discovering how much weight it will support.
6. Some of the concepts involved in designing and constructing a house are explored. Students produce to scale a drawing of floor plans for a house, which they design.
7. Students explore various careers in technology and the necessary education for those careers.
8. Various manufacturing concepts are discussed and students gain an appreciation for the role that technology plays in manufacturing.
9. Students gain a feel for the importance of technology in their own life, and explore what life without technology might be like.
Various techniques will be used to teach the above listed learning objectives. Students will keep a notebook that contains all handouts, tests and homework. Students are subject to testing on the concepts taught and grading of papers and projects. They learn the concept of quality work in construction and manufacturing of their bridge project. Organizational skills are taught with an emphasis on learning to be organized. Students leave the classroom with a complete technology section that will prove a valuable reference in future problem solving.
